HAPPY BIRTHDAY MRS.JULIET ONI

HOW TO LIVE SUCCESSFULLY WITH HYPERTENSION

Millions of people worldwide die each year from hypertension, which predisposes them to many other serious health problems. But shedding weight in combination with good diet and medications may help avoid several complications, such as heart disease, associated with hypertension, reports Sade Oguntola.

Approximately seven million people worldwide die each year from high blood pressure (hypertension), which predisposes people to heart disease and other serious health problems. While losing weight can lower blood pressure in some cases, a combination of good diet with certain medications may help reduce the risk of complications associated with hypertension.
Blood pressure is the pressure of the blood against the walls of the arteries. Blood pressure results from two forces. The heart creates one force as it pumps blood into the arteries and through the circulatory system. The other is the force of the arteries as they resist the blood flow. The higher, systolic number represents the pressure while the heart contracts to pump blood to the body. The lower, diastolic number represents the pressure when the heart relaxes between beats. While lowering blood pressure in patients with hypertension can reduce cardiovascular risks and reduce illness and death, weight loss can be a key factor in achieving that goal. A meta-analysis of 48 studies, published before March 2007, which was conducted by researchers at Medical University of Graz, Australia, and led by Dr. Karl Horvath found losing weight by pairing a healthy diet with weight-loss medication could help lower blood pressure. Of those studies, 38 assessed diet and 10 focused on medications for weight loss.

The researchers found that dieting and medication helped lower blood pressure in high BP patients. They stated: “Reduction of blood pressure was higher in patients treated with weight loss diets or drugs.” According to the authors, “a reduction in body weight of approximately 4 kilogrammes was necessary to achieve a reduction of approximately 6 milligrams of mercury in systolic blood pressure with dietary treatment and of approximately 2.5 milligrammes of mercury with drug.” The study was reported in the March 24 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

It is clear that diet affects blood pressure. Vegetarians, for example, tend to have lower blood pressures than non-vegetarians. Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Medical School reported that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products is highly effective in lowering blood pressure. Their study involved 459 adults with systolic blood pressures below 160 mm Hg and diastolic pressures between 80 and 95 mm Hg. The fruits and vegetables diet (modified control diet) produced a drop in systolic and diastolic blood pressure of 2.8 mm Hg and 1.1 mm Hg respectively.

Experts have found that a diet that emphasises fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products might act as a natural diuretic that could help many people reduce blood pressure. Results from their studies indicated that such a diet that promotes salt excretion, similar to diuretic drugs, which are widely used to treat high blood pressure by increasing urine production, is very helpful to black people and elderly people, including Nigerians. These are people found to have sodium-sensitive hypertension and whose blood pressures were very sensitive to changes in the amount of sodium intake.

As early as the 1920’s, researchers noted a relationship between caloric restriction, weight loss and a decreased incidence of hypertension. In 1988, a meta-analysis of aggregate data from 12 prospective studies, including five randomised controlled trials (RCTs), found that on average each 1 kilogramme decrease in body weight in obese hypertensive patients was associated with a 2.4 mm Hg systolic and 1.5 mm Hg diastolic decrease in blood pressure.
Experts have suspected that high blood pressure may be due to excess weight in half of overweight adults. Researchers in Italy found that about 50 per cent of overweight, hypertensive adults, ranging in age from 29 to 65 years, achieved normal body weight and blood pressure after six months of treatment with a reduced-calorie diet.
In a comment by Dr. Roberto Fogari, M.D., the lead investigator of the study and professor of medicine at the University of Pavia, Italy: “This is important because it means that in these patients with elevated blood pressure who were overweight, the blood pressure was not a form of essential hypertension but was hypertension secondary to body weight.” Fogari emphasised the importance of initiating dietary advice and treatment in overweight patients with high blood pressure before beginning drug treatment. “The first step is to help the overweight patient lose weight,” he said. “Only after six months of trying to reduce the patient’s weight can a decision be made about drug treatment.”

According to Dr. Babatunde Salako, a consultant physician at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, “diet and exercises are adjunct to hypertension treatment and diet regulation alone cannot ensure proper control of blood pressure, especially if the case is the moderate to severe type.” Dr Salako said much as diet and lifestyle changes may lower blood pressure in a case where the blood pressure is mild, such an individual will equally need to be regularly monitored to see that the blood pressure remains at a safe limit. Meanwhile, dieting to lose weight may lower blood pressure in overweight people with hypertension, but effects are modest and so dieting may not be effective alone. Though a number of medications are used to try to decrease high blood pressure, people may also wish to try non-drug treatments, especially if their hypertension is mild. One alternative is losing weight, as lowering body weight may lower blood pressure. Losing weight may also lower the medication doses needed by people taking drugs to try to treat hypertension. However, weight loss alone does not signifi-cantly reduce blood pressure.

In the meantime, here are some suggestions that can lessen your chances of developing high blood pressure and help keep you healthy in many other ways as well:• Maintain a normal weight for your height.
•Exercise regularly. This can help in preventing you becoming overweight or help you in losing pounds if you need to. Exercise also helps keep your heart and blood vessels strong and healthy.
• Eat a healthy diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables.
• Don’t smoke. Smoking and high blood pressure are major risk factors for having a heart attack or stroke later in life.
• Keep your stress levels in check. It may help to practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises.
• Decrease your sodium (salt) intake. Consuming less sodium has been proved to help lower blood pressure in some people and may prevent some from developing high blood pressure in the first place.
• Avoid drinking too much alcohol, which is associated with high blood pressure.
• Know your blood pressure. Have it checked regularly because, although high blood pressure is more common in adults, hypertension can occur at any age.

How i left Banking for Nollywood---Blessing Effiong-Egbe

Tell us something about your life as a model and how it all started for you?
Life as a model was fast and fun, short-lived but got to a reasonable and fulfilling stage. I started out in Nigeria in 2001 with the Silverbird International Fashion show, shortly after, I was chosen to do the Ghana celebration 2001 and right after that I won the ECOFEST best model competition and things took-off from there.
How did your foray into Nollywood begin?
After graduating from the University of Calabar in 2001, where I studied theater arts, banking was the first job that came calling but I obviously didn't last six months in the industry. Full time modelling took over and then subsequently, a film role here and there, it wasn't until I furthered my studies in film making in South Africa that I decided to indulge fully in the business, writing, producing and starring in my works.
Which movie gave you your break?
As a writer/ producer, it would be Before the Vow, as an actress, I wouldn't really know.
How long have you been in the movie industry?
Off and on, five years.
What are the challenges you have faced since you took to acting?
Switching from modelling to acting may seem easy as they are all interwoven but the reality is different. In modelling, you are kind of robotic. Whereas, in acting, the key word is relaxation and complete involvement, so I would say that has been my major challenge.
What was your first professional fee?
It was N8, 000 in the movie Bleeding Heart, where I did four scenes as a barmaid to Ngozi Nwosu.
What separates you from other actresses in the industry?
My ways, my lifestyle, my person, my entire morphology.
What has been the high point of your career as an entertainer?
In modelling, apart from earning the top dollar jobs, it would be me representing Nigeria at the top model competition in Lebanon in 2003 and then working with Tyra Banks for the America next top model competition. Sound cheesy, but at the time, I thought these incidences were the highest points of my career. In the moviedom, I'm yet to get to the peak, but for now, my movie The Rivals winning the Best International Drama at the New York festival will suffice.
What do you look out for when you accepts movie scripts?
As a scriptwriter, I'm taught to always have interesting and inviting things in my story that would make any actor want to play the role. So, for me, that is what I look out for in a script; substance if it's a serious story and if it is not then I'll go for the fun content any day.
You seem to operate on a low profile, why is this so?
I've always been one to operate that way, it's just the way I am, I don't think there's anything to it really, but I have my loud moments and definitely my crazy moments.
What is your unique selling point?
Just being open and plain and telling it like it is, transparent in my business and social dealings and somewhat time perfect.
Outside entertainment, what else does Blessing do that takes most of her time?
Before now, travelling and exploring life took the cake, but in the past year, settling down, pregnancy and now nursing has taken over.
Do you have any regrets going into entertainment?
No, but I do have regrets working with a replicating company called Ecomax Technologies.
They made a silly and unprofessional blunder of running a Yoruba film titled, Taiwo Taiwo over The Rivals, a movie which I produced with Omoni Oboli. Having gone through so much and spent so much money, the company had to ruin it by their mistake. We are in the process of sorting that out now and will make it known to the public what happens. But the good copies are now in circulation so people can buy copies now. Other than this I have no regrets coming into the industry.
Give us a peek into your private life?
I have always and I'm still enjoying a relaxed and happy private life and I am not about to make it chaotic by giving you a peek into it so you can hound me.
What was growing up like for you?
Interesting. I grew up in the barracks in Port Harcourt, enjoyed the simplicity of life where everyone had a close-knit life and family was key. There were no problems of fear and insecurity and uncertainty of the government and economy. Life was good.
Recount some childhood experiences you cherish.
At about four years of age, I used to be the dance champion in all parties so much so that I had a little showcase at the governors' party then.
What informed your decision to do what you are doing at the moment?
Destiny and plenty of brainstorming and planning.
Who is the man in your life?
My hubby.
When did you meet him and what is the latest on your state of health, you know what I mean?
We met, we got married, I got pregnant and now we have a baby.
Informed from your experience in the movie industry, where do you think we are heading?
To the rocks if we are not careful.
What is your philosophy of life?
Plan, plan and more plan.
What does friendship mean to you?
Trust, truth and dependence.
What should a person do to win your trust?
Be truthful and transparent.

GEMSTONE JEWELRIES

PEARL JEWELRIES

The Rich History of Pearls

Since ancient times, the pearl has been a symbol of unblemished perfection. It is the oldest known gem, and for centuries it was considered the most valuable. A fragment of the oldest known pearl jewelry, found in the sarcophagus of a Persian princess who died in 520 BC, is displayed in the Louvre in Paris. To the ancients, pearls were a symbol of the moon and had magical powers. In classical Rome, only persons above a certain rank were allowed to wear pearl jewelry. The Latin word for pearl literally means "unique", attesting to the fact that no two pearls are identical.
Pearls have been considered ideal wedding gifts because they symbolize purity and innocence. In the Hindu religion, the presentation of an undrilled pearl and its piercing has formed part of the marriage ceremony.
In the romance languages (Spanish, French, Italian), margarita means pearl. The word pearl appeared in the English language in the fourteenth century. In the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, pearls were very fashionable in Europe as personal ornaments. The clothing of both men and women were embroidered with them.
In the Americas, both the Incas and Aztecs prized pearls for their beauty and magical powers. Spanish explorers of the New World found the natives in possession of rich pearl fisheries. For many years, the New World was best known in European cities like Seville and Cadiz as the land where pearls came from.
Most European countries in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries had laws regarding who could and could not wear pearls. Teachers and lawyers, for example, could not wear fringes or chains with pearls.
Native Americans of the Atlantic Coastal areas and the Mississippi River Basin were the first to collect and use U.S. freshwater mussel pearls and shells. Pearl pendants and ear pendants were worn by both sexes and both pearl and shell were used for decorative purposes on articles of clothing. Some of the tribes used pearls as tributes, reportedly Powhattan (Pocahontas' father) had large stores of pearls received as tribute. Additionally, armlets, pendants, and gaming pieces were made from mussel shell.

CORAL JEWELRIES

Color ranges from white to red. It grows in branches that look like underwater trees. Beautiful coral jewelry is made and worn in many parts of the world, most coral is found in the Mediterranean Sea or in the Pacific, the most valuable colors of coral are red, black, and pink which is known as angel skin coral. Coral in the form of coral stone and gold jewelry is among the most ancient of gem materials, coral jewelry has been made in many parts of the world and used for adornment since prehistoric times. Coral inlays and coral jewelry have been found from the Iron Age. Coral has a history of religious significance.
Tibetan Lamas use coral rosaries, Coral is one of the seven treasures in Buddhist scriptures, Coral Jewelry like
coral bangles, coral necklace , coral rings, worn against the skin, touching it, was long thought to be powerful talisman that could stop bleeding, protect from evil spirits, and ward of hurricanes.
To clean Coral jewelry, wipe it gently with a moist soft cloth, as Coral is much softer than other gem materials with a hardness of only 3.5. As a result it should be stored carefully to avoid scratches. Coral is also porous so care should be taken to see that coral jewelry does not come in contact with chemicals

SEX--AN ACT OF WORSHIP

Sex is about pleasure, which it is,but isn't.An act itself, which is,but isn't.Sex reflects something far grander, far more beautiful.Sex is mostly believed to be body focused but isn't.It's about the heart,Great sex is heart sex.The big 'O' in sex is not Orgasm but Oneness.

Sex is about intimacy and connecting, although Sex is physical-it's an emotional connection of souls-a spiritual act.Every single act of sexual intercourse is an act of Worship. The question is'Who is being worshiped'.The Apostle Paul tells us 'offer your bodies as living scarifices, holy and pleasing to God-this is spiritual act of worship. We offer our bodies in spiritual worship through our singing, our praise, our teaching, our hands through service. Our bodies are living scarifice offered every day in various physical expressions of spiritual glorification of God.

When we offer our bodies in sexual union,it is a spiritual act of worship, but we can blaspheme just as surely as we can glorify.Marital union is meant to be a feast--Sex is a bodily feast as the two''consume'' each other. It's the consummation of their Oneness. They offer themselves for consummation, and God is glorified.

Couples need to give themselves permission to learn the disciplines of Sex--the discipline of feasting,of playfulness,of sensuality and give themselves permission to be erotic,to be truly naked and unashamed.

Sex points us to God,the holy letter written by Nahmandias in the 13th century sees sex as a mystical experience of meeting with God.''through the act(of intercourse)they become partners with God in the act of creation. When a man unites with his wife in holiness, the Shekinah is between them in the mystery of man and woman---Shekinah glory is the same presence felt by Moses when he encountered God face-to-face.To use our sexuality as a spiritual discipline,to integrate our faith and flesh.God made flesh and with it some amazing sensations. While the male sexual organ has multiple functions, the female clitoris has just one---Sexual pleasure.

Sex is an act of glorification unto God in marriage, couples should see Sex as a sign of worship and praising God.

JOIN US AGAIN NEXT WEEK AS WE REVEAL THE IMPORTANCE OF SEX IN MARRIAGE
